A roundtable on venture capital with the participation of over 40 venture funds and business angels was held in Tashkent
The Ministry of Digital Technologies of Uzbekistan organized Investor’s Day in a roundtable format titled “Cross-Border Capital Dialogues: Uzbekistan Venture & Angel,” in collaboration with IT Park Uzbekistan.
The event attracted over 40 attendees, comprising representatives from international venture funds, business angels, private investors, and government agencies. The agenda focused on collaborative investment opportunities, as well as global and regional trends, and the obstacles hindering capital inflows into the nation.
Javoncher Abdullaev, Fund Manager and Board Member of Polyvalent Capital, opened the roundtable with welcoming remarks and outlined the primary discussion topics. Insights regarding the evolution of venture markets in various countries were provided by Sara Daniel (Doha Tech Angels), Marcel Dridje (European Business Angel Network), and Alina Trukhina (Utopia Capital Management).
The session featured notable figures from the venture capital sector across the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and other nations. Participants included Robin Butler (Sturgeon Capital, United Kingdom), Jan Davidek (Purple Ventures, Czech Republic), Sergio Argento (Argento Ventures, USA), Michael Lints (Golden Gate Ventures, Qatar), Oliver Hughes (TBC Bank Group), along with business angels from Georgia, Malaysia, Kenya, and several other countries.
Throughout the discussion, attendees pinpointed significant challenges to investment, such as legal and tax barriers, foreign exchange regulations, and corporate governance issues. In partnership with representatives from ministries and regulatory bodies, actionable measures were suggested to create a more conducive investment environment, enhance co-investment models, and encourage cross-border deal flow.
The meeting concluded with participants outlining subsequent steps and reaffirming their dedication to enhancing collaboration. The roundtable marked a pivotal moment in bolstering Uzbekistan’s status as an emerging hub for venture capital in Central Asia.
